In her work, Ileana M?l?ncioiu covers the big themes of great literature: the soul, death, faith, tragedy and limits. Considered a poet of “tragic guilt” (according to the title of her thesis for her doctorate of philosophy in 1977) and “an Antigone that leads Oedipus by the hand, but an Antigone with the soul of Electra” (Nicolae Steinhardt), not only during the communist regime in Romania but also after 1989 and on to the present day, Ileana M?l?ncioiu has been an example of civil conscience and a beacon of uncompromising moral behaviour. She has received numerous prizes, including the Romanian Academy Award, the Award of the Association of Writers of Bucharest and the Union of Writers of Romania, the “Mihai Eminescu” and “Lucian Blaga” National Awards for her work as a whole, and the Prometheus Grand Prize for her Complete Works. In an interview, she stated: “My greatest joy is that I have never written what other people would have wanted, only what I believed, and that I could publish my first book again without feeling any shame.”
Especially for this event, 10 of her poems will be translated into Italian for the first time by Danilo de Salazar, who has been awarded a study grant for young translators by the Romanian Cultural Institute in Bucharest.
